Did you know that your rug is at least 4000 times dirtier than your toilet bowl? There are at least 200,000 bacteria in addition to germs, dust mites, and allergens per square inch thriving in your rug. Carpets are germ breeding farms. Some of these germs are antibiotic resistant. Some are really stubborn and can really cause problems: Staph (Staphylococcus aureus) clings to wet or sweaty feet, gets deposited on your carpet or rug and remains there until the rug is cleaned out. It gets transferred to humans who sit, eat, wrestle or sleep on the rug and may cause death. Clampylobacter is a winter strain that threatens the immune system and can cause diarrhea, cramps, fever and pain. Norovirus survives on the carpet or rug for many weeks then it gets airborne and then causes stomach flu on humans. Fungi and mold cause allergies and even death. Micrococcus can cause skin infections, meningitis and sometimes death. Enterococci, a treatment resistant strain, causes urinary tract infections, as well as a host of other problems including diverticulitis and meningitis. There are other types that live in your carpet, rug or mattress that you must watch out for.
Carpets, especially oriental carpets, are a home’s treasure. It is where kids play and watch TV and exposure to the germs on the carpet is often hard to avoid. The best way to keep these problems at bay, aside from professional rug and carpet cleaning, is to clean the carpet regularly making sure that it remains dry always. Also best to wash up before bed each day to make sure that you do not infect your mattress with germs that come from outside or from the carpet.
Stains, from beer, food, cola, ice cream and other stuff are not only unsightly, they also are a haven for germs if left untreated. If you want to clean your rug, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. One way would be by leaving a piece of damp cloth over the stain with a weight on top of the cloth that will transfer the stain from the rug to the cloth. To hasten the process, iron the cloth using a steam iron and you will notice the cloth absorb the stain quickly.
There are many ways to keep your rugs and carpets fresh smelling. One way is to use a combination of essential oil and a 50-50 mixture of water and vinegar. You can also sprinkle baking soda on the affected part to absorb the smell then follow through with a vacuum.
